But Aids to Reflection is not an easy read; some of Coleridge’s concerns are dated, his style is ornate, with his sentences given to long dependent clauses. In "Aids to Reflection", Coleridge had intended to produce a selection of writings by the 17th-century archbishop, Robert Leighton.

However, he was to expand his commentary. Thus, this commentary is dominated by his thought, and traces his religious thinking over the years. Aids to Reflection is the result of the amalgamation of the author’s personal transcendental philosophy with more traditional Protestant doctrine.
